POSITION SUMMARY (Primary purpose of job)

Special Education Teachers are responsible for providing direct instruction to students and maintaining an environment conducive to learning.  This responsibility is specific to IDEA eligible students and the student Individualized Education Program (IEP) services.

 

SPHERE AND SCOPE OF INFLUENCE (Supervisory scope, district impact and budgetary responsibility)

Special Education Teachers are responsible for supervising students, development and implementation of IEPs, and utilizing District resources accordingly.  Input and collaboration toward these efforts is critical as well as communicating with families, teachers, and service providers in order to provide a Free Appropriate Public Education (FAPE) to our eligible student population. 

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES (Major duties which the position exists to perform)

  1. Design and provide specialized instruction that cognitively engages students, increases critical thinking and problem solving skills, and assess learning to guide instruction aligned to the IEP. 
  2. Build and maintain secure relationships with students as well as maintaining professional relationships with colleagues, parents, and patrons.
  3. Maintain accurate IDEA records in accordance with timelines including individual student records, classroom records, content area reports, grade level reports, and building/department records as required under IDEA and the legal obligation of the School District.
  4. Actively engage as a member of a team including but not limited to, student teams, grade level or department teams, focus groups, curriculum teams, PLCs, and/or other building and District teams.  This includes facilitating IEP meetings and participating in student planning meetings.  Special Education Teachers continually and consistently collaborate with education and other professionals
  5. Report suspected abuse, neglect, discrimination, harassment, etc. as directed by Board Policy and otherwise required by law.  
  6. Other duties as directed by the supervisor.
  7. Regular and reliable attendance as it aligns to the scope of this position. 

OTHER DUTIES (duties which the incumbent can be expected to perform)

  1. Additional duties necessary to supervise students, monitor events, or assist in an emergency situation.    
  2. Attend building events such as open houses, curriculum night, informational meetings, and events designed to bring the public into the District.
  3. Occasional or sporadic duties such as taking tickets at an event, participating on an interview committee, covering a duty of a colleague, engaging in curriculum and/or instructional resource committees, attending staff meetings and/or student meetings such as IEPs, etc.
  4. Participate in professional development activities and/or professional work outside of the typical school work day and/or school calendar such as planning meetings, IEP meetings, eligibility meetings, etc. 

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

Supervise students at all times and/or as directed by supervisor

Supervise events as described above and/or directed by supervisor

 

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS (Minimum educational requirements, licenses, skills and experience required as well as preferred options)

Bachelor degree or higher

Valid Missouri teaching certification in special education or eligibility for special education certification with the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE) through alternative methods

Typical school conditions including indoor and outdoor activities are applicable.  Please note that the physical requirements working with this student population can vary depending on the students individualized needs and services.  Additionally, all record keeping for the purposes of IDEA implementation involve the District’s technology systems requiring technical skills and student information system navigation.
