POSITION SUMMARY (Primary purpose of job)

Special Education Teachers are responsible for providing direct instruction to students and maintaining an environment conducive to learning.  They are also responsible for an IDEA eligible student caseload and ensuring a Free Appropriate Public Education.

 

SPHERE AND SCOPE OF INFLUENCE (Supervisory scope, district impact and budgetary responsibility)

Special Education Teachers are responsible for supervising students,development and implementation of IEPs, and utilizing resources accordingly.  Input and collaboration toward these efforts is critical as well as communicating with parents, patrons, and other stakeholders to advance the District vision, mission, and goals.

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES (Major duties which the position exists to perform)

  1. Develops and provides instruction that cognitively engages students and aligns to student goals and services relevant to individual needs. This includes within legal timelines and compliance with local, state, and federal law and policies. 
  2. Builds and maintains secure relationships with students as well as maintaining professional relationships with colleagues, parents, and patrons.  This extends to a variety of students with individual needs.
  3. Maintains accurate records in accordance with timelines including individual student records, classroom records, content area reports, grade level reports, and building/department records associated with this role.  Specifically, IEP development and monitoring among other data points and reports needed for programming and eligibility.
  4. Actively engages as a member of a team including but not limited to, student teams, grade level or department teams, focus groups, Building and/or District teams.  The Special Education Teacher continually and consistently collaborates with educators and other professionals from both within and outside the school community in a systematic way as well as leads many of these efforts through IEP and associated meetings.
  5. Reports suspected abuse, neglect, discrimination, harassment, etc. as directed by Board Policy and otherwise required by law.  
  6. Other duties as directed by the supervisor. 
  7. Regular and reliable attendance as it aligns to the scope of the position.  

 

OTHER DUTIES (duties which the incumbent can be expected to perform)

  1. Additional duties necessary to supervise students, monitor events, or assist in an emergency situation.    
  2. Attend building events such as open houses, curriculum night, informational meetings, and events designed to bring the public into the District.
  3. Occasional or sporadic duties such as taking tickets at an event, participating on an interview committee, covering a duty of a colleague, etc.
  4. Participate in professional development activities and/or curriculum work outside of the typical school work day and/or school calendar.

   

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

Supervise students at all times and/or as directed by supervisor

Supervise events as described above and/or directed by supervisor

 

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS (Minimum educational requirements, licenses, skills and experience required as well as preferred options)

Bachelor’s degree or higher

Valid Missouri teaching certification appropriate to the level and subject matter
